Happy Birthday Grundtvig!

Happy Birthday Grundtvig!

23 February 2010

This year the European Commission's Grundtvig programme is celebrating 10 years of supporting European cooperation in adult education and training.  To get the celebrations off to a good start the Commission hosted a major conference in Brussels at the end of January "Grundtvig: A Decade of European Innovation in Adult Learning".

The aim of the event was to explore the Grundtvig programme's achievements and contribution to European adult education and to discuss what more could be done in the current programme which runs up to 2013.  It also provided a good forum to gather recommendations for the next phase of the programme up to 2020.

The event brought together the different parts of the adult learning community from across Europe.  Delegates included practitioners, policy makers, experts and agencies running the programme in the participating countries. From the UK there was representation from a wide range of organisations including charities, public sector, the education sector and private companies.

At the core of the event were thematic Jane Grundtvig Conferenceworkshops which focused on key issues that had been identified and prioritised over the decade including: broadening access, boosting participation; migrants; disabilities and special needs; active citizenship; senior citizens; basic skills, etc.  Each workshop showcased some of the most successful Grundtvig projects for that topic.

Communicating the Lessons Learned

The conference documentation included useful overview on the key topics mentioned above, contacts for exemplary projects and a short reading list.
