'Pathways to inclusion' Conference, Budapest

22 - 24 February 2010

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture, in close collaboration with the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, is organising a major European conference entitled “Pathways to inclusion – Strengthening European cooperation in prison education and training”.

The conference will be co-hosted by the Hungarian Prison and wil bring together 240 key stakeholders from over 30 European countries. 8 UK Project Co-ordinators will also be in attendence,  members of

The objectives of the European Conference are:

  • to draw together high quality outcomes from the projects and partnerships supported by EU funds;
  • to foster the mainstreaming of this good practice by drawing it to the attention of policy-makers;
  • to promote networking and exchange of experience between organisations working in this field;
  • to identify future needs for European cooperation in this area, in the light of overall policy trends.

The main emphasis of the conference will be on demonstrating the results of projects and partnerships funded through the Grundtvig and Leonardo programmes.

It is hoped to promote a constructive and fertile dialogue between the ‘practitioners’ engaged in furthering European cooperation through projects, partnerships and networks on the one hand, and key policy-makers and system managers at national level on the other. On the basis of this dialogue, the conference will play an important role in identifying emergent trends and needs in the area of prison education and training, and making strategic recommendations for improving provision and enhancing the effectiveness of the European programmes in the years ahead.

The opening keynote speech will be delivered by Prof. Tom Schuller, author of the recent report on “Crime and Lifelong Learning” and director of the high-level UK “Inquiry into the Future for Lifelong Learning”.
